Top Packing Essentials – Do Not Leave Home Without Them!

Updated: 3 hours ago

Packing for a cycling a retreat/trip, is part of the adventure! Having the right items with you can make all the difference, whether you're conquering steep climbs, unwinding on the mat, or enjoying some well-deserved downtime. Here’s my ultimate guide to the essentials you shouldn’t leave home without.

Chamois Cream

Even the toughest behinds need a little TLC, especially on long or grueling rides. Chamois cream prevents saddle sores and keeps discomfort at bay. I love Premax Luxury Chamois Cream, enriched with natural ingredients and boasting antibacterial properties. It’s soothing, smells great, and washes out easily—perfect for those high-mileage days.

Earplugs

Staying in unfamiliar surroundings can mean unexpected noises that can ruin a holiday, particularly if you are a light sleeper. From snoring roommates to nocturnal wildlife, a pair of earplugs can save your sleep. Lightweight and inexpensive, they’re a small addition to your bag with a big impact on your rest and recovery!

Socks – and Plenty of Them!

Nothing compares to the feel of fresh, clean socks. Bring plenty—they’re light and take up minimal space. And for the fashion-conscious cyclist, brightly colored or coordinated socks add a dash of style (and maybe even imaginary watts!). Look for socks that are breathable and moisture-wicking for maximum comfort.

Dirty Washing Bag

Whilst laundry services are available on all retreats, it is inevitable that you are going to build up a stash of stinky cycling kit by the end, even if you wash it regularly. A dedicated dirty washing bag keeps odors contained and separates clean clothes from used kit. I recommend a lightweight, waterproof dry bag—just remember to let your gear dry completely before packing it away.

Mesh Bags for Organization

Mesh bags are a game-changer when it comes to staying organized. Pack items by category—cycling kits, casual wear, underwear and so on—so you can quickly grab what you need without rummaging through everything. This also helps minimize the dreaded “suitcase explosion” that seems inevitable when unpacking!

Favorite Ride Snacks and Hydration

We’ll take care of snacks and hydration during the rides, but if you have a go-to energy gel, bar, or drink mix, bring enough to last the trip. Familiar flavors and ingredients can provide an extra boost when you need it most.

Sunscreen

Protecting your skin is non-negotiable. Choose a high-quality, sport-friendly sunscreen that’s sweat and water-resistant. Apply liberally and reapply throughout the day to keep sunburn at bay.

Portable Charger

Ensure your cycling computers/watches and communication devices stay charged at all times. A compact power bank is an essential modern travel accessory.

Yoga Mat

If you intend to participate in the post ride yoga/stretch classes and have a yoga mat, bring it! Familiarity can enhance your experience, and travel mats are lightweight and easy to pack. If you're new to yoga or tight on space, don’t worry—Soulfit Adventures has spares available. Also, pack comfortable clothing for yoga sessions. Gentlemen, boardshorts can work just fine.

Additional Essentials to Consider:

Lightweight Rain Jacket

Weather can be unpredictable, especially in mountainous areas. A lightweight, packable rain jacket will keep you dry without weighing you down.

Multi-tool and Spares

While we provide support for bike maintenance, it’s always handy to carry a compact multi-tool for quick adjustments and minor fixes.

Casual Evening Wear

After a day of riding, you’ll want something comfortable yet stylish for evening meals or exploring local culture. Pack lightweight, wrinkle-resistant clothing to keep things easy and a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

Travel Documents and Essentials

Don’t forget your passport, travel insurance details, and any necessary visas. A small document organizer can help you keep these important items safe and accessible.

First Aid Kit

Pack a small kit with band-aids, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications. It’s always better to be prepared!

Packing thoughtfully ensures you’re comfortable, prepared, and ready to make the most of your retreat. If you have any questions or need advice on packing, feel free to reach out—I'm here to help you start your adventure fully equipped!
